Second Conditional: If Clause Type 2

Second Conditional (2. Koşul Cümleleri), Türkçedeki "Eğer yapsaydım, yapardım/ederdim..." veya "Eğer yapacak olsaydım, yapardım/ederdim..." gibi hayali veya gerçekleşme ihtimali düşük durumlardan bahsederken kullandığımız bir yapıdır. Genellikle şimdiki zaman veya gelecekle ilgili, gerçek dışı veya gerçekleşme olasılığı düşük olan varsayımlarımızı ifade etmek için kullanılır. Örneğin, "Eğer daha çok param olsaydı, o arabayı alırdım" cümlesinde, şu an param olmadığı için araba alamıyorum, yani durum hayali veya gerçek dışıdır.

Yapı

Second Conditional cümleleri iki ana kısımdan oluşur: "if" cümlesi (koşul) ve ana cümle (sonuç).

Olumlu (Affirmative)

If + Subject + Past Simple verb, Subject + would + Base Form verb

If Cümlesi (Koşul)	Ana Cümle (Sonuç)

Not: "If" cümlesi ve ana cümle yer değiştirebilir. Eğer ana cümle başa gelirse, araya virgül koymaya gerek yoktur.

• I would learn Japanese if I had more time.
• She would tell you if she knew the answer.

Olumsuz (Negative)

If + Subject + didn't + Base Form verb, Subject + wouldn't + Base Form verb

Not: wouldn't kısaltması would not anlamına gelir.

Soru (Question)

Soru formunda genellikle ana cümle kısmı soru haline getirilir.

Would + Subject + Base Form verb + if + Subject + Past Simple verb?

Kullanım Alanları

1. Hayali veya Gerçek Dışı Durumlar

Şu anki gerçek durumun tam tersi olan veya gerçekleşme olasılığı düşük olan hayali durumları anlatmak için kullanılır.

• If I were a bird, I would fly to the sun. (Maalesef kuş değilim.)
• If I had a million dollars, I would buy a big house. (Maalesef bir milyon dolarım yok.)
• If she lived closer, we would see her more often. (Ne yazık ki yakın oturmuyor.)

2. Tavsiye Verme ("If I were you...")

Özellikle "If I were you" kalıbıyla birine tavsiye verirken kullanırız. Burada "were", tüm özneler için (I, he, she, it dahil) kullanılabilir. Bu, subjunctive mood denilen özel bir kullanım şeklidir.

• If I were you, I would apologize. (Senin yerinde olsaydım, özür dilerdim.)
• If I were you, I wouldn't tell him. (Senin yerinde olsaydım, ona söylemezdim.)

3. Hayali Sonuçlar

Hayali bir koşulun olası sonuçlarını belirtmek için kullanılır.

• If we didn't have cars, cities would be much quieter. (Arabalarımız olmasaydı, şehirler çok daha sessiz olurdu.)
• If I spoke French, I could work in Paris. (Fransızca konuşsaydım, Paris'te çalışabilirdim.)

4. could ve might Kullanımı

Bazen would yerine could (yapabilirdim) veya might (belki yapardım) kullanılabilir. Bu, sonucun kesinliğini azaltabilir veya imkan/yetenek anlamı verebilir.

• If I had more money, I could buy a new car. (Daha çok param olsaydı, yeni bir araba alabilirdim. - İmkân)
• If it didn't rain, we might go for a walk. (Yağmur yağmasaydı, belki yürüyüşe çıkardık. - Olasılık)

Yaygın Hatalar (Türkçe Konuşanlara Özel)

Türkçe düşündüğümüzde Second Conditional yapısında bazı hatalar yapabiliriz.

❌ If cümlesinde "would" kullanmak

Türkçedeki "eğer yapardım" ifadesinin doğrudan çevirisi gibi düşünülerek "if" cümlesinin içinde "would" kullanma eğilimi görülebilir. Ancak standart Second Conditional yapısında "if" cümlesinde Past Simple, ana cümlede ise would + V1 kullanılır.

Neden: Second Conditional'da standart yapı if + Past Simple ve would + V1 şeklindedir. Would normalde sonuç cümlesinde kullanılır.

❌ If cümlesinde Past Perfect kullanmak

Bazen "eğer yapsaydım" ifadesini had done gibi Past Perfect ile karıştırma hatası yapılabilir. Past Perfect, geçmişte gerçekleşmemiş koşulları anlatan Third Conditional'ın tipik yapısıdır.

Neden: Second Conditional genellikle şimdiki veya gelecekteki hayali durumlar için kullanılır. Past Perfect (had + V3) ise genellikle geçmişteki gerçekleşmemiş koşulları anlatmak için kullanılır.

❌ "If I were you" yerine "If I was you" demek

Türkçede "ben olsaydım" derken tek bir yapı kullanırken, İngilizcede özellikle varsayımsal durumlarda were kullanımı tercih edilir.

Neden: If I were you kalıbında were, subjunctive mood (dilek/varsayım kipi) olarak kullanılır. Özellikle If I were you gibi kalıplaşmış ifadelerde standart kullanım were şeklindedir. Günlük konuşmada was da duyulabilir, ancak varsayımsal durumlarda were daha standarttır.
