Past Continuous ve Past Simple Farkı

Past Continuous, geçmişte bir an boyunca devam etmekte olan eylemi anlatır. Past Simple bir eylemin olup bittiğini söylerken, Past Continuous o eylemin akışını / sürmekte olduğunu vurgular. Türkçedeki "-iyordu" eki (yapıyordum, gidiyordum) buna karşılık gelir.

"I worked yesterday." = Dün çalıştım. (bitmiş bir bilgi) "I was working at 9 PM." = Saat 9'da çalışıyordum. (o sırada akıştaydı)

İkisini birleştirip kullanmak çok yaygındır: uzun bir eylem devam ederken kısa bir eylem onu keser.

"I was debugging when the power went out." = Hata ayıklarken elektrik gitti.

-ing ekleme kuralları (Present Continuous'la aynı)

• Genel: work → working, watch → watching
• -e ile bitenler: -e düşer → write → writing, take → taking
• Kısa fiil + tek sessiz: harf çift → run → running, sit → sitting, swim → swimming
• -ie ile bitenler: -ie → -y → lie → lying, die → dying

Olumsuz

Subject + was / were + not + V-ing

• I wasn't working when you called.
• They weren't listening to me.
• She wasn't paying attention.

Soru

Was / Were + subject + V-ing?

• Were you sleeping at midnight?
• Was he driving when the accident happened?
• What were they doing at the party?

Kullanım Alanları

1. Geçmişte belirli bir anda süren eylem

Bir saat ya da olay belirtilir, sen o sırada akış hâlinde olan bir eylemden bahsedersin.

• At 8 PM yesterday, I was watching a movie.
• This time last year, we were living in Ankara.
• When the alarm rang, she was sleeping.

2. Uzun eylem + kısa eylem (kesinti)

Çok yaygın bir kalıp. Uzun, arkaplandaki eylem Past Continuous, onu kesen kısa eylem Past Simple olur.

• I was cooking dinner when the doorbell rang.
• He was driving home when he saw the accident.
• We were talking about her, and then she walked in.

Bağlaç ipuçları:

• When çoğunlukla Past Simple ile başlar: When I arrived, she was studying.
• While çoğunlukla Past Continuous ile başlar: While I was cooking, she arrived.

3. Aynı anda iki uzun eylem (paralel)

İki eylem de aynı anda akıyorsa, ikisi de Past Continuous olur. Genelde while ile bağlanır.

• While I was coding, my partner was reading.
• She was studying while her brother was playing video games.
• They were chatting while we were preparing dinner.

4. Hikâyede arka plan / sahne kurma

Hikâye anlatımında zemin (hava durumu, ortam, atmosfer) genelde Past Continuous'tur. Asıl olaylar Past Simple olur.

• It was raining heavily. The wind was howling. Suddenly, someone knocked on the door.
• The sun was setting. Birds were singing. She opened her laptop and started to write.

Past Continuous'ta Kullanılmayan Fiiller

Stative verbs (durum bildiren fiiller — know, love, want, believe, understand, have/own, etc.) Present Continuous'ta olmadığı gibi Past Continuous'ta da kullanılmaz. Onların geçmiş hâli Past Simple olur.

Not: have "yemek yemek / vakit geçirmek" anlamındaysa continuous olabilir: We were having dinner. ✓

Yaygın Hatalar (Türkçe Konuşanlara Özel)

❌ Her "-yordu"yu Past Continuous yapmak

Türkçede "biliyordum, istiyordum, anlamıyordum" çok doğal cümlelerdir ama bunlar stative. İngilizcede Past Simple olurlar.

❌ Kesinti olayında zamanları karıştırmak

Uzun olan eylem Past Continuous, onu kesen kısa olay Past Simple olur. Tersi yanlıştır.

❌ when ve while'ı doğru fiille eşleştirememek

When I was studying, my brother was playing.	While I was studying, my brother was playing. ✓

Kural değil, eğilim: when + kısa olay (Past Simple), while + uzun süreç (Past Continuous). İstisnalar olur ama bu kalıp güvenlidir.

❌ Past Continuous'u bitmiş kısa olay için kullanmak

Past Continuous "akış" bildirir. Bir eylem belli bir noktada olup bittiyse Past Simple'dır.
