Inversion (Devrik Cümle) Konu Anlatımı

Türkçede vurgulamak istediğimiz bir ögeyi cümlenin başına alarak anlamı güçlendirebiliriz. Örneğin, "Hiç böyle güzel bir gün görmedim" cümlesinde "hiç" veya "böyle güzel bir gün" gibi ögeleri vurgulayabiliriz.

İngilizcede de bazı olumsuz veya sınırlayıcı ifadeler cümlenin başına getirildiğinde, özellikle resmi ve edebi dilde kullanılan özel bir söz dizimi ortaya çıkar: Inversion (devrik yapı).

Normal İngilizce cümle yapısında:

Subject + Auxiliary + Verb

şeklindeki sıra, inversion olduğunda:

Negative/Limiting Expression + Auxiliary + Subject + Verb

şeklini alır.

Yani yardımcı fiil veya modal fiil, öznenin önüne geçer. Görünüş olarak soru cümlesine benzer ancak cümle soru değildir.

Inversion özellikle şu tür ifadeler cümlenin başına geldiğinde görülür:

• never
• rarely
• seldom
• hardly
• scarcely
• little
• not only
• under no circumstances
• on no account
• only after
• only then
• only when
• only if
• only by
• no sooner

Temel yapı:

Negative/Limiting Expression + Auxiliary/Modal + Subject + Main Verb

Normal cümlelerle karşılaştırırsak:

• Never have I seen such a beautiful sunset. → I have never seen such a beautiful sunset.

• Rarely do they visit us anymore. → They rarely visit us anymore.

• Seldom does she complain about anything. → She seldom complains about anything.

• Under no circumstances should you open this door. → You should not open this door under any circumstances.

Hangi Yardımcı Fiil Kullanılır?

Inversion'da kullanılacak yardımcı fiil, normal cümlenin zamanına göre belirlenir.

Cümlede be varsa

be doğrudan öznenin önüne geçer.

• She is rarely late.

• Rarely is she late.

• He was never informed.

• Never was he informed.

Cümlede başka bir yardımcı fiil varsa

Mevcut yardımcı fiil öznenin önüne geçer.

• I have never seen this before.

• Never have I seen this before.

• She can rarely attend.

• Rarely can she attend.

Yardımcı fiil yoksa

Present Simple veya Past Simple'da do / does / did kullanılır.

• They rarely visit us.

• Rarely do they visit us.

• She seldom complains.

• Seldom does she complain.

• He never mentioned it.

• Never did he mention it.

Önemli: do / does / did kullanıldığında ana fiil yalın hale döner.

She seldom complains. → Seldom does she complain.

NOT: Seldom does she complains.

Kullanım Alanları

1. Never, Rarely, Seldom, Hardly, Scarcely gibi ifadelerle

Bu ifadeler cümlenin başına getirildiğinde inversion yapılabilir.

• Never have I seen such dedication. (Daha önce hiç böyle bir bağlılık görmedim.)

• Rarely do we get a chance to relax like this. (Böyle rahatlama fırsatı nadiren elimize geçer.)

• Seldom does he complain about his workload. (İş yükünden nadiren şikâyet eder.)

• Hardly had I sat down when the phone rang. (Daha yeni oturmuştum ki telefon çaldı.)

• Scarcely had we arrived when it started to rain. (Daha yeni varmıştık ki yağmur yağmaya başladı.)

Dikkat:

Hardly / Scarcely + had + subject + V3 + when

No sooner + had + subject + V3 + than

şeklindeki kalıplar özellikle yaygındır.

2. Not only ... but also ...

Not only cümlenin başına geldiğinde, not only ile başlayan kısımda inversion yapılır.

• Not only did he apologize, but he also paid for it. (Sadece özür dilemekle kalmadı, bedelini de ödedi.)

• Not only is she talented, but she is also very hardworking. (Sadece yetenekli değil, aynı zamanda çok çalışkan.)

• Not only can he speak English, but he can also speak French. (Sadece İngilizce konuşamıyor, aynı zamanda Fransızca da konuşabiliyor.)

Not only cümlenin başında değilse inversion gerekmez:

He not only apologized, but he also paid for it.

3. Only ile başlayan ifadeler

Only after, only then, only when, only if, only by gibi sınırlayıcı ifadeler cümlenin başına geldiğinde, genellikle ana cümlede inversion yapılır.

Önemli nokta: Only'den sonraki yan cümlede inversion yapılmaz.

• Only after I had finished my work did I go home. (Ancak işimi bitirdikten sonra eve gittim.)

Burada:

Only after I had finished my work → normal söz dizimi

did I go home → inversion

Başka örnekler:

• Only then did she understand the truth. (Ancak o zaman gerçeği anladı.)

• Only when he arrived did we start the meeting. (Ancak o geldiğinde toplantıya başladık.)

• Only if you work hard will you succeed. (Ancak çok çalışırsan başarılı olursun.)

• Only by working together can we solve this problem. (Ancak birlikte çalışarak bu sorunu çözebiliriz.)

Önemli: Only after veya only when gördüğümüzde her iki tarafta da inversion yapmayız.

✓ Only after she had finished her degree did she start looking for a job.

❌ Only after had she finished her degree did she start looking for a job.

4. Little ile

Little, "çok az" anlamından ziyade "haberi olmamak / farkında olmamak" gibi olumsuz bir anlam taşıdığında cümle başında inversion yapılabilir.

• Little did he know that his life was about to change forever. (Hayatının sonsuza dek değişmek üzere olduğundan haberi yoktu.)

• Little did they realize how serious the situation was. (Durumun ne kadar ciddi olduğunu farkında değillerdi.)

Buradaki little, miktar bildiren normal little değildir; olumsuz/limitli bir anlam taşır.

5. Under no circumstances, On no account gibi güçlü olumsuz ifadelerle

Bu tür ifadeler güçlü bir yasak veya uyarı verir.

• Under no circumstances should you open this door. (Hiçbir koşulda bu kapıyı açmamalısın.)

• On no account should you give him your password. (Ne olursa olsun ona şifreni vermemelisin.)

• At no time did he admit his mistake. (Hiçbir zaman hatasını kabul etmedi.)

6. Conditional Inversion

Inversion yalnızca olumsuz zarflarla kullanılmaz. Özellikle if yerine had, should ve were kullanılarak koşul cümlelerinde de inversion yapılabilir.

Bu kullanım daha çok resmi, yazılı veya edebi İngilizcede görülür.

Type 3 — Had

Had + Subject + V3 ...

= If + Subject + had + V3 ...

• Had I known, I would have helped you. = If I had known, I would have helped you.

• Had she arrived earlier, she would have caught the train. = If she had arrived earlier, she would have caught the train.

Type 1 / olası gelecek — Should

Should + Subject + V1 ...

= If + Subject + should + V1 ...

• Should you need any assistance, please ask. = If you should need any assistance, please ask.

• Should you have any questions, please contact us. = If you should have any questions, please contact us.

Bu yapı özellikle resmi e-postalarda ve duyurularda oldukça yaygındır.

Type 2 — Were

Were + Subject + ...

= If + Subject + were ...

• Were I you, I wouldn't do that. = If I were you, I wouldn't do that.

• Were she here, she would help us. = If she were here, she would help us.

7. No sooner ... than

Bir olayın hemen ardından başka bir olayın gerçekleştiğini anlatır.

No sooner + had + Subject + V3 + than + ...

• No sooner had I arrived than it started to rain. (Varır varmaz yağmur yağmaya başladı.)

• No sooner had the game ended than the fans rushed onto the field. (Maç biter bitmez taraftarlar sahaya koştu.)

Bu yapıda:

No sooner → than

kullanılır.

Hardly / Scarcely ise genellikle when ile kullanılır:

Hardly had I arrived when it started to rain.

Inversion Günlük Konuşmada Kullanılır mı?

Inversion'ın bu türleri özellikle:

• resmi yazılarda,
• akademik metinlerde,
• haber dilinde,
• edebi anlatımlarda,
• güçlü vurgu gereken durumlarda

yaygındır.

Günlük konuşmada ise daha doğal olan normal söz dizimidir.

Örneğin:

Never have I seen anything like this.

daha güçlü ve biraz daha resmi/edebi duyulur.

Günlük konuşmada:

I've never seen anything like this.

çok daha doğaldır.
